What Irmo actually is
Irmo began as a railroad stop, incorporated in 1890 on the Columbia, Newberry & Laurens line, and stayed rural until subdivisions arrived in the late 1960s and 1970s. It sits between the city and the lake: the dam end of Lake Murray on one side, Harbison State Forest and the Broad River on the other, with Saluda Shoals Park on the river nearby.
