What Lexington actually is
Lexington was laid out in 1820, when the county seat moved to a sand ridge near Twelve Mile Creek, and grew with the railroad to Augusta and a textile mill in 1890. Its Main Street was rebuilt after a fire in 1916; today the Icehouse Amphitheater stands where the town's 1928 ice plant did. I-20 serves the town at two exits, and the Lake Murray dam, now a national civil engineering landmark, lies to the north.
